Sometimes, under the right circumstances, it's possible to place a medicine on your child's cavity to slow its growth. This medicine is called Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and although it has been used for a very long time in Europe, South America, and Japan, it was approved by the FDA in 2014 for use in North America. Utilizing SDF can slow the progression of cavities while not requiring any use of dental handpieces or removal of tooth structure. Some great indications for SDF include:

  • Very young children that are not old enough to have a filling or crown placed safely
  • Children that can not tolerate having a filling or crown placed
  • Children with special health care needs

After a comprehensive exam, your dentist will discuss if SDF is a good option for your child!
